Jean Thomas PhD award

Due to the generosity of a St Catharine's alumnus, Peter Dawson and of his wife Christina, the College is delighted to be able offer one fully-funded PhD studentship per year to a Home or EU student undertaking a PhD at St Catharine's College.

Award details

Known as the Jean Thomas PhD Award in honour of our former Master, Professor Dame Jean Thomas, the award is to be made annually on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrable financial need. The award is open to applicants in any subject, although preference will be given to those in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences.

Preference will be given to candidates who list St Catharine’s as their 1st choice of College on their GRADSAF or those who have previously undertaken an undergraduate or graduate degree at the college. Where a successful applicant has been awarded membership at another College, they will be required to transfer their membership to St Catharine’s.

The Award is tenable for three years subject to satisfactory progress and covers the full University Combined Fee plus an annual maintenance stipend at the minimum rate set by the Graduate Admissions Office.

Eligibility for an award may be conditional on the results of the candidate's current degree. The awarding committee will consist of the Graduate Tutors, the Financial Tutor and the Master.

How to apply

In order to be considered for the award, applicants must have named St Catharine’s as their 1st or 2nd choice of College on their University application and hold an offer of admission for a graduate course at the University of Cambridge. Candidates should thus submit their application to the Graduate Admissions Office at the earliest possible opportunity. To do so, please visit http://www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/
