Robert Woodlark, founder of the College, was particularly concerned with the provision of books for his new foundation, donating 140 titles. From this early collection, recorded in the Library's first catalogue in 1475, the Library has grown to accomodate an ever-expanding number of books and readers. Today we have over 60,000 books split over three locations, serving the needs of students, Fellows, staff and researchers.
The Sherlock Library, located above Hall on E Staircase, contains the College's collection of books in modern languages (including linguistics), English literature, art and architecture, and cinema and theatre studies. The New Library in Chapel Court contains the rest of the Library's collection of modern books. Apart from some reference books and journals all items are available for loan to current members of College. The College's special collections (including early printed books and manuscripts, collection of Darwinalia, library of John Addenbrooke, and an unrivalled collection of early printed plays by James Shirley) consists of about 20,000 volumes, which may be consulted by prior arrangement with the Librarian.
The library staff are based in the New Library. The librarian, Colin Higgins, can be contacted by email (librarian@caths.cam.ac.uk) or phone (01223 338343) during office hours.
