Stephanie Clarke - MSc in IT dissertation diary

Introduction

Hello, my name is Stephanie Clarke, a student on the MSc in IT at the University of Liverpool. Having completed all my modules (Computer Structures [A], Computer Communications and Networks [A], Databases [A], Artificial Intelligence [A*], Operating Systems [A*], Advanced Topics in Computer Science [A], Security Engineering [A*] and Object Oriented Programming – Java [B]), the final bit was the dissertation. I started the DS module on the 24th of April 2004 and had to finish by the 24th of November 2004. The title of my dissertation is ‘Investigation and implementation of a network monitoring system in an academic College environment’. It was handed in on the 21st of November 2004. I got the final marks on the 27th of May 2005 and graduated on the 8th of July 2005.

This site was created as a diary of my progress documenting how I got on, my experiences, thoughts and details of what I discovered needed doing at each stage (or at least what I did), which I hope will be of use to future students. Bear in mind though that the requirements can change so what was asked of me may be different from what is asked of you. Where I have become aware of changes I have gone back and included a comment, but I may not have noticed everything and of course I haven't had access to Embanet since I graduated.

I have included copies of the various documents I created along the way - or most of them, anyway. Some I have not published here, for reasons that are explained at the appropriate time in this diary. One of the things I found was how little there is around in the way of examples for students to look at, although the dissertation library which was created a few months after I started is a good step in that direction. At each stage I felt like I working in the dark, hoping that what I am doing was right, and wishing there was a site like this one to guide me! So my work is not necessarily the best :-), but I hope it is of help to you. The last page of this diary consists of some final thoughts - looking back on how it went, and some suggestions/advice for future students based on my experiences.

You are welcome to download my documents, although I should stress that the University’s rules on plagiarism and collusion should be read and (of course) obeyed. I created this site with the blessing of my Program Manager and supervisor. I did so to help my fellow students do well – but please make sure you don’t break any rules, inadvertently or otherwise!

There is a quick version of this site here if you prefer. The quick version includes links to all the pages and to all my documents, including a Word document containing the complete text of the site.

If you are reading this website I would love to know, especially if you find it useful, download any of my documents or have any comments to help make it better – my address is sjc74@cam.ac.uk .
