Black History Month programme

The provisional programme of activities marking Black History Month at St Catharine's includes:

  • Friday 1 October & Sunday 31 October: The College will again fly the flag of the Bahamas to commemorate our first Black student. Find out more.
  • Month long: The Shakeshaft Library will showcase recent works of Black alumni and students of St Catharine's, and archival material about alumnus Dr Cecil Belfield Clarke
  • Thursday 14 October: Movie night hosted by the JCR.
  • Saturday 23 October: Spoken word event and Q&A with Malik Al Nasir, St Catharine's postgraduate student and author of 'Letters to Gil' (2021, William Collins)
  • Sunday 24 October: Choral Evensong service live-streamed from the Chapel, featuring the works of Black composers of traditional Anglican choral music, and guest speaker Chine McDonald, alumna and author of 'God Is Not a White Man: And Other Revelations' (2021, Hachette).   • Wednesday 27 October: Supporting a local Black-owned business - a food truck visits the College's St Chad's site at lunchtime
