Luminaria: A Ceremony of Light at St Catharine's

15:47, Monday 4 December 2017

The festive season at St Catharine’s College is always an exciting time, but for 2017 it will be extra special as we hold our first ever Christmas carol concert. Luminaria: A Ceremony of Light is a free public event which promises to be a spectacular evening as Main Court is lit up and filled with a brass ensemble, carol singing, mince pies and mulled wine, culminating in a performance by the outstanding Girls’ Choir of St Catharine’s College.

This event is being generously sponsored by Ashtons Legal, which has enabled us to open up the Luminaria on a large scale, with 250 tickets available to the public. These were snapped up within 10 days (a waiting list is available) but luckily, there is enough room for a further 300 spectators to view the event on the lawn outside College on Trumpington Street. Michael Frape, head of the Ashtons Cambridge office, said of the event: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to sponsor the inaugural Luminaria and to entertain a selection of clients and professional contacts at what promises to be a very special evening. It is lovely to see the College staging an event much of which can also be enjoyed by members of the public."

In addition to the festivities, we will also be raising money on the night for Camfed (the Campaign for Female Education). With the performance from the Girls’ Choir it is the perfect fit to raise money for an organisation that focuses on tackling poverty and inequality by supporting marginalized girls to go to school and succeed, and empowering young women to step up as leaders of change. Speaking of the event, Ellen Grant from Camfed said: “We are delighted that St Catharine's has chosen to support Camfed through the inaugural Luminaria! We are a Cambridge-based charity which supports girls to go to school in Africa, so the connection to St Catharine's and the Girls' Choir is very fitting. Any kind donations made to Camfed on the evening will also be doubled by the UK government as part of our Aid Match campaign!". So be sure to look out for Camfed donation points on the night.

We can’t wait to host the Luminaria, and we look forward to seeing you there!
