The College was very sad to learn this week of the death of Mr John (Ben) Benjamin Bibby on 21 January, at the age of 88.
Ben matriculated in 1949 to read Natural Sciences, and he became a Fellow Commoner of St Catharine’s in 1996. He sponsored and endowed two research fellowships for the College, and the Bibby Fellowship is currently held by our Fellow Dr Sriya Iyer.
During his time at St Catharine’s Ben enjoyed rowing, and after leaving Cambridge he developed a strong connection with the RNLI, donating The James Bibby, a 21-year-old Tyne class lifeboat, to Barrow's station in 1986 in memory of his great grandfather.
On 29 January, the College flag was flown at half-mast in memory of Ben.
