Dr John Shakeshaft, 1929-2015

Tuesday 7 July 2015

We are very sad to announce that Dr John Shakeshaft (1961), Emeritus Fellow of St Catharine's, died on Monday 6 July.

John completed his undergraduate degree, PhD, and Research Fellowship in Electrical Engineering at St John's College, Cambridge, before being elected to the St Catharine's Fellowship in 1961 as one of around sixteen Fellows. He specialised in radio astronomy and was one of the key researchers working in this field, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s (more details can be found on the Department of Astrophysics website). At St Catharine's, John was Director of Studies for over thirty years (1961-94), Fellow Librarian for over forty years (1962-2004), and President between 1990 and 1994. He became an Emeritus Fellow in 1997. He also held several posts at the Royal Astronomical Society, including Editor and Secretary. He was a dear friend and respected colleague, and will be remembered and missed by many at St Catharine's.

A memorial service for John will be held at in the College Chapel at 2pm on Saturday 7 November, followed by a reception.
