St Catharine’s secures planning permission to remodel central spaces

Friday 31 July 2020

St Catharine’s has received planning permission and listed building consent from Cambridge City Council to proceed with essential building works to renovate, modernise and integrate facilities at the heart of the College’s Island Site on Trumpington Street, in order to enhance the experience of our students, alumni, staff, Fellows and visitors, from prospective students to visiting academics.

Professor Sir Mark Welland, Master of St Catharine’s, commented, “On behalf of the College, I’m delighted to confirm that we have received the necessary planning permission and listed building consent to proceed with the central spaces project. This news is a credit to all involved, including the Fellows, students and staff who have provided valuable and thoughtful input on the scope of the project over recent months.”

The College will work to address conditions set out as part of the planning permission before commencing and completing the project. Preliminary enabling works will begin in Michaelmas Term, ahead of the main project works starting in January 2021.

An initial timeline for the project will be published in the coming weeks so that members of the College, including Freshers and incoming postgraduates, can start to familiarise themselves with these plans in advance of Michaelmas Term.
