Who's who in the College
This is a brief introduction to the various College Officers and staff whom you might encounter during your time at St Catharine's. To help you put faces to names, a photo gallery of key staff and the College contact directory is given in the right sidebar.
Who’s who in the College
Members of the College can loosely be divided into ‘senior members’, comprising the academic staff ‘fellows’ of the College and ‘junior members’, including undergraduate and graduate students. The fellows are responsible for the government of the College, and some also have specific areas of responsibility within it.
The Master is head of the College. Together with the Master, the Official and Professorial Fellows comprise the Governing Body of the College; the Governing Body is ultimately responsible for making decisions about College policy and how the College is run. In addition, there are a number of Research Fellows who are primarily engaged in research, rather than in teaching or College administration. The President is the Master’s deputy, and in some ways the ‘head fellow’.
The Graduate Tutors help to support the general well-being of all graduate students, and you should not hesitate to call on them for advice or assistance on academic, financial, social and personal matters. They are also responsible for admissions and allocate bursaries and grants for travel and research.
The Senior Tutor coordinates the work of the Tutors, and is responsible for general academic standards.
The Dean is responsible for non-academic discipline.
The Bursar administers the financial affairs of the College and staff (and so is involved with a variety of matters relevant to junior members).
The Steward is responsible to the Governing Body for the administration of College catering.
The Praelector oversees the formalities of matriculation and graduation.
The Chaplain is responsible for the College Chapel and is also concerned with the well-being of all junior members. He may be consulted on any question of a personal or social nature and by members of any religious denomination - or none. If you wish to speak with someone in confidence on any matter, be it to do with work, money, stress, relationships, homesickness, addictions, etc, the Chaplain is here to listen. See the later section about the chapel and chaplaincy.
The Development Director runs the Alumni and Development Office, which keeps in touch with past members and undertakes fundraising for student support and new College facilities.
Other important people
In addition to these people, there are a number of members of staff responsible for the day-to-day running of the college. Students may need to consult these staff when seeking information or decisions.
The Head Porter and the team of Porters may usually be found in the Porters’ Lodge; together they look after a wide range of tasks involved with the ‘front of the College’ from the issuing of keys and sorting of mail to college security. The Porters will often be your first port of call for information. There is always a Porter on duty, although they may occasionally be absent from the Lodge for short periods.
The Librarian is responsible for the management of the College's New and Sherlock Libraries, and the development of the College's collections of books, journals and electronic information resources. Library staff have their office in the New Library in Chapel Court.
The staff of the College Offices can be found in Bull Front – the Finance Office on the ground floor and tutorial and admissions on the first floor. The Graduate Administrator's office is opposite the Rushmore room.
The Domestic and Maintenance Supervisors, the Maintenance Staff and the Bedmakers, under the Buildings & Domestic Services Manager, are responsible for the cleanliness and routine maintenance of the College.
Catering arrangements are the responsibility of the Catering and Conference Manager, the Butler and the Kitchen and Catering Staff. The Butler’s office is in the Buttery, the Hall Manager’s office adjoins the dining Hall.
The Master’s Secretary has an office on the ground floor of K and the Bursar’s Secretary has an office on the ground floor of C.
The College IT Staff are available for consultation on computing matters. Their office is in Johns building, room K4.
