Matriculation year: 2019

Degree: PhD in Sociology

Background

"I started the scholarship in 2019, with a research focus on race and ethnicity in Southeast Asia and decolonial theory. My research project aims to address a gap in race and ethnicity scholarship in which most theoretical frameworks are oriented around the context of US and Western Europe. I use research interviews to uncover how different ethnic groups in Malaysia experience instances of everyday racism, as well as how they respond to and interpret these experiences. Through this, I aim to contribute towards race theory which goes beyond the black-white paradigm and addresses racial stigma and prejudice between non-black peoples of colour in the Southeast Asian context."

Life at Catz

"As a certified bibliophile, I have most enjoyed the dozens of well-stocked libraries across the College – the Sherlock library at Catz (due to reopen in 2022!) was a particularly warm and atmospheric place for reading. Most importantly, I developed great friendships through my time here, and have been able to work alongside a fantastic cohort of postgraduates."

Advice for applicants

"Don’t be afraid to reach out to people affiliated with your targeted department or scholarship for advice, even if you are currently strangers. Most people would be happy to have a quick chat or email exchange, as they were once in your exact same position."
