Matriculation year: 2022

Degree: PhD in History

Background

"My research journey began in 2022 and delves into the roles and actions of British commercial institutions in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. In particular, I will be looking closely at the intelligence and strategies British civilian companies used to try to mitigate the many challenges posed by factors such as the fall of Shanghai in November 1937, the legitimacy and sustainability of the Kuomintang government, the rise of the American firms in China and indeed, even the sanctions of the British government that threatened their very existence and longevity."

Life at Catz

"I have found life at Catz extremely welcoming! Not only are the students in College extremely friendly, but frequent socials organised by the MCR have also provided a great opportunity to make new friends. The Porters have been very patient and supportive during my time here and I’m grateful to have been accepted into Catz!"

Advice for Applicants

"Although there will always be a certain amount of stress when applying, I have found it useful not to dwell on it too much once you’ve submitted. I think it is important to manage your expectations and that you ought to be proud of yourself regardless of the scholarship outcome because, in order to apply, you would have had to have an offer from Cambridge!"
