TAN Chee Yong

Matriculation year: 2021

Degree: PhD in Development Studies

Background

"My research interest lies in understanding nation-building in Malaysia, especially in areas that relate to tackling structural inequalities that have been in both West and East Malaysia since the colonial era. My PhD will focus on exploring the origins of structural inequalities among communities during the British rule, the changes that happened after Merdeka, the introduction of the New Economic Policy, and how contemporary Malaysia can move forward. I hope my PhD research could make a meaningful contribution to helping Malaysia from both policy and socio-historical dimensions."

Life at Catz

"My time at Catz has been wonderful. As a strategically located college, libraries, departments, museums, market squares, and the old town centre are just within walking distance. The accommodations are very comfortable, and I could make many amazing friends doing different degrees from all around the globe. More importantly, the people at Catz are very friendly and supportive. They patiently answered my queries and helped me with issues like visa applications. I think having such supportive environment is important in aiding my academic journey at Cambridge."
