Matriculation

Matriculation marks the formal admission of a student to membership of the University. This process involves signing a formal declaration agreeing to abide by the Statutes and Ordinances of the University and College, after which you are recognised as a full member of the University and College.

Every candidate for matriculation must subscribe to the following declaration by signing the Matriculation Registration Form:

I promise to observe the Statutes and Ordinances of the University as far as they concern me, and to pay due respect and obedience to the Chancellor and other officers of the University.

A person is deemed to be matriculated from the beginning of the term in which a completed Matriculation Registration Form and satisfactory evidence of his or her qualification to matriculate is known by the College.

This is where you will meet your Postgraduate Tutors, the Master and some of the other Fellows and key staff of the College.

As part of the College registration process, the College is required to verify the identity of all new students. You will therefore need to attend in person (unless you are in quarantine or will not arrive until after this date) please bring both the original and a colour photocopy of one of the following forms of photographic ID with you:

Passport          National Identity Card          Photographic Driver's License

We will also have the services of Jet Photographic who will be taking individual photographs of everyone which will be available to buy as individual or group pictures.

Dress code for the day

Option one: Dark suit, white shirt, collar and tie, black shoes and gown (no hoods)

Option two: Dark skirt and white blouse or suitable dark dress, black shoes and gown (no hoods)

Gowns

Gowns are worn for ‘formal’ occasions, as well as matriculation and graduation – the most common is Formal Hall. Gowns are also worn in the University Church and the Senate House (which is where the degree ceremony will be held at the end of your course) and also in the College Chapel during services. Gowns should be worn with formal clothes. They may be bought new or second-hand from some Cambridge tailors Ede & Ravenscroft and Ryder & Amies. The Graduate Union and the MCR offer a second-hand gown shop, but these may be limited. Note that the gown you need will not be the gown of the degree you are studying for.
