Transport

Cycling is by far the easiest (and quickest) way to get around Cambridge. When cycling you are expected to obey the rules of the Highway Code.

The following tips will help keep you and your bike safe:

  • Wear light coloured and/or reflective clothing and a helmet
  • Ensure you have working front (white) and rear (red) lights. It is a legal requirement when cycling at night and in reduced visibility.
  • Be respectful to others and do not cycle in pedestrian areas, on pavements or the wrong way up one-way streets.
  • When you leave your bike, even briefly, make sure it is locked to something secure and that the lock goes through the frame and forks, not just the front wheel.
  • Invest in a decent bike lock as theft is common. Halford's Bike Lock guide is a useful source of advice
  • Make a note of your bicycle's frame number and register your bike for free with Immobilise
  • If you will be away for more than a week, park your bike in the College's secure bike storage facility (accessible from the Fellows' car park on the main site).

If you haven’t cycled before or haven’t been on a bike for a long time, there is useful information to get started here

Motor vehicles

Due to the severe shortage of residential parking in Cambridge, undergraduate students are not usually permitted to possess a car in the city. Graduate students are normally be permitted to do so dependent on adequate arrangements for parking. For the full regulations and possible exceptions, you will need to refer to the proctorial notice.

The College has limited parking available at its graduate residences for students who have a medical or academic need to use a car whilst in Cambridge.

Trains, buses, and airports

Cambridge is very well located for easy access to London, and from there to the rest of the UK, Europe, and the world. Information on trains, buses, and UK airports can be found on the city's travel information pages.

There is a subsidised bus service available to holders of the University Card, which serves many of the University Departments (including the West Cambridge site), the town centre and Addenbrooke's Hospital. For more details on the Universal Bus service and other routes, please visit the University of Cambridge website.

Insurance and Security

Graduates are responsible for their own belongings, and the College does not accept liability for loss or damage to private property within the grounds of the Graduate residences. You are strongly advised to take out insurance for your belongings either as an extension of your parents' household policy or from a company specialising in insurance for students.

Please note that thefts have occurred at College residences but nearly all cases have been due to opportunism, so you can easily avoid this by taking simple precautions:

  • keep external doors closed
  • close windows and doors when you leave private or communal rooms (particularly on the ground floor)
  • use a computer lock if you have a laptop
  • when parking your bicycle, ensure it is locked through the frame and front wheel and anything valuable that can be removed (such as lights and trip computers) is taken with you.

The Cambridgeshire Police have produced this letter and this checklist for new students which can help keep you safe during your time here.
