Girls' Choir Head Chorister wins BBC competition

Monday 26 October 2015

We are delighted to announce that Agatha Pethers, Head Chorister of the St Catharine's Girls' Choir, has been named one of the BBC Radio 2 Young Choristers of the Year.

The final of this prestigious competition was broadcast on Radio 2 from the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. Agatha was named joint winner along with Angus Benton, a chorister at Winchester College Chapel.

The chair of the judging panel, composer John Rutter, said: “Another stellar competition this year, with an amazing group of finalists, two worthy winners, and a lovely warm supportive atmosphere in the audience. It's always a joy to be involved with this competition, which celebrates the huge contribution made by young people to choral singing in our nation - something to be proud of.”

The Girls' Choir is directed by St Catharine's Fellow Dr Edward Wickham, and sings regularly at Chapel services, as well as performing in concerts alongside the College Choir.

You can listen again to the Chorister of the Year final on the BBC iPlayer.
