Wednesday 1 November 2023

The following highlights from various sports clubs and teams were compiled from recent reports. If any captains or team members have a result that you'd like to feature in the next round-up, please contact comms@caths.cam.ac.uk.

Rugby union

On 21 October, the combined St Catharine’s-Homerton side beat Downing-Caius 8-0 (CURFU College Rugby) but couldn’t break through the defences of an undefeated Clare, Corpus Christi and King’s (CCK) team who clinched a 3-0 win with “an outrageous 35m drop goal” in the dying minutes of the match (CURFU College Rugby).

Fast-forward a week and the squad finished 29-0 against a combined Peterhouse-Emmanuel-Selwyn-Trinity Hall team. Isaac Wong, a first-year Human, Social, and Political Sciences undergraduate, was awarded ‘man of the match' for his “fearless carries making several kilometres of ground”. (St Catharine’s RUFC)

All collegiate rugby union teams will now be placed into two divisions, with weekly fixtures starting on 4 November. The first round of the Cuppers knockout competition also starts on 11 November.

Badminton

The first matches of the new year included a victory for the second team over Anglia Ruskin University with “an epic doubles match where our pair 1 clinched their second game after saving two match points before securing the reverse sweep”. The women's team dominated their match against Newnham College “with two easy sweeps in the doubles and exceptional work in the singles”. (The Kittbag)

Lacrosse

The St Catharine’s mixed team “carried the wheel home" from their first match of the season against Girton College on 22 October, which ended in a 7-3 victory. (The Kittbag

Netball

The recently promoted ladies’ netball team celebrated their first win of the year – 12-10 against a strong team from Downing College on 21 October – before a 7-14 defeat against Magdalene College on 28 October. (The Kittbag)

After being awarded a walkover against Emmanuel College earlier this term, the mixed squad faced their first league match of the new season on 29 October: “the team unfortunately suffered the consequences of our promotion success last season and had to face a particularly strong Downing side”. The match finished as a 4-18 loss. (The Kittbag)

Football

It has been a mixed bag this season: the first men’s team lost 1-3 against King’s College on 14 October and 0-1 against Trinity College on 21 October, while the second men’s team drew against Christ’s first team 1-1 on 21 October. (The FA)
