Please follow the link to the configuration instructions below for your own operating system to connect to the College network via the wired (Ethernet) connection.

  1. Click the Start button. In the search box type 'Control Panel'. Click on 'Control Panel'. Choose 'Network and Internet', then'Network and Sharing Center'.
  2. Click on ‘Change adaptor settings’. Right click on the ‘Ethernet’ icon and choose ‘Properties’.
  3. First, untick ‘Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)’ (you may need to scroll down to see it). Then single click on ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’ and choose ‘Properties’. 
  4. Set the options to ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’ and to ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’.
  5. Click ‘OK’, and then ‘Close’.
  6. Now go back to the ‘Control Panel’, then to ‘System and Security’and then ‘System’. Click on 'Change settings'. Click 'Change...' and set the Computer name box to your username (the first part of your Cambridge email address). Click OK in the message box telling you to restart your computer. Click Close, then click 'Restart Now'.
  7. Now try using the Internet browser and see if that works. If not, see this page.

Once it does work, it is OBLIGATORY to ensure that all your accounts have passwords.  Details are given at the bottom of this page.

  1. On the Start screen, right click anywhere on the background to make the ‘All apps’ icon appear. Click on that, then click on the ‘-’ symbol at the bottom right of the screen.   6. Now try using the Internet browser and see if that works. If not, see this page.

  1. Click on the apple symbol (top left) and choose ‘System Preferences’ and then ‘Network’. Choose to configure the built-in ethernet and set the ‘Configure IPv4’ option to ‘Using DHCP’. Click ‘Apply Now’.
  2. (Please note that the various versions of the Mac operating system are slightly different so your version may not exactly match these instructions. However, they are a useful guide.)
  3. See if you now have Internet access. If not, restart the computer see if that works. If it still doesn't, double-check you have followed the instructions correctly and that the network cable is plugged in properly. If this doesn't help, contact the Computer Office.
