Our Black history

St Catharine's College is rightly proud of our Black history, starting in 1912 with the earliest Black member of the College on record. Alfred F. Adderley (1912, Law), Dr Cecil Belfield Clarke (1914, Natural Sciences) and Thomas Hutton-Mills Jnr (1914, Law) were identified as our earliest Black alumni thanks to research presented by L'myah Sherae as part of a recent seminar on the College's Legacies of Enslavement.

Since 2020, St Catharine’s College has started the new academic year by celebrating Black History Month and embracing over a century of Black students, staff and Fellows contributing to our academic community. A programme of activities is organised to enable us all to reflect and build on these important historical experiences throughout October and beyond.
