Sports highlights (Weeks 3 & 4)

Wednesday 14 February 2024

The following highlights from various sports clubs and teams were compiled from recent reports. If any captains or team members have a result that you'd like to feature in the next round-up, please contact comms@caths.cam.ac.uk.

Rowing

Clare Hole (2020, Natural Sciences; now studying an MPhil in Population Health Studies) rowed in the 7 seat of the Cambridge women’s openweight first boat against Oxford Brookes on the Championship Course on 11 February. “Washy conditions and slack water challenged both crews, but Brookes were able to capitalise on their advantage [since the Fulham bend] and push the lead to two lengths around the Surrey bend”. Meanwhile, Lewis Gray (a second-year Geography undergraduate) was at stroke in the Cambridge men’s lightweight boat that finished one length ahead of London Rowing Club on the same day and course. The St Catharine’s College Boat Club had four boats racing in the Newnham Head on 3 February:

  • The St Catharine’s first 8+ finished top of the women’s first division and a whopping 13 seconds ahead of the second-place boat.
  • The men’s first 8+ finished in a respectable 7th position out of 12 boats in their first division race.
  • Both the men’s second 8+ and third 8+ raced in the lower division, finishing 9th and 19th out of 20 boats, respectively.
  • The women’s second 8+ brought up the rear of the women’s second division.

Lacrosse

The mixed team has started February with two back-to-back wins. There was a 6-1 victory over Churchill College, shortly followed the next weekend by a 7-2 win against the combined forces of Peterhouse, Fitzwilliam and Murray Edwards (affectionately named “Pitzwards” and winners of last year’s Cuppers competition). Football

St Catharine’s men’s first team beat Robinson College 3-2 in Division 2, hopefully a good warm up before the Cuppers semi-final at 2pm on 17 February at the College’s own sports grounds. (The Football Association)

The men’s second team started 2024 with impressive wins against Madgalene’s first team and Churchill’s second team, but lost 3-1 to Gonville and Caius’s second team on 3 February. (The Football Association)

Netball

The mixed team faced Trinity Hall in their second match of 2024, which left the opposition “absolutely exhausted” and St Catharine’s with a 14-7 victory. (The Kittbag)

The same weekend, the women’s team had an away game at Girton College, which sadly finished up a 16-8 loss. (The Kittbag)
