The 1473 Foundation

Read about the 1473 Foundation, the donors' recognition circle at St Catharine's.

The St Catharine’s 1473 Foundation was established in 2009 as a circle of Members and friends who have, through their generosity to St Catharine’s, affirmed their support of the College’s commitment to providing an outstanding education. The name of the Foundation commemorates the opening of the College on St Catharine’s Day in 1473.

Membership is open to those who have made gifts totalling £50,000 and above, and is generally conferred by the Master at the 1473 Foundation Gala, which takes place annually in College. We also hold occasional international events to recognise our supporters overseas, and in 2016 we welcomed Members and friends to the first 1473 Foundation Gala in Hong Kong. In April 2018, we were delighted to host the second overseas 1473 Foundation Gala in Singapore.

Investing in Our Future

The establishment of the 1473 Foundation was part of the launch of the St Catharine’s Campaign at the beginning of 2009, with the aim of raising £30 million. This target was achieved in 2016, and the sum financed College buildings, more teaching posts, and increased financial support for students. Gifts of all sizes from over 2,000 Members and friends brought us to our Campaign total.

In January 2019, following a comprehensive eighteen month strategic review of all aspects of College life, supported by audits and feasibility studies, a new campaign called Our College, Our Future was launched. The target amount to be raised is £50 million and in February, following an extraordinary gift for student bursaries and a £5 million pledge to renew the Hall suite, our campaign got off to a flying start. The focus of fundraising, and therefore of the attention for those wishing to join the 1473 Foundation, is to now raise £20 million for Our Buildings & Spaces projects – the Hall, St Chad’s and Hobson's,  £7.5 million to protect through financing in perpetuity the key posts of College life and College sport, and £2 million on widening participation projects.

We look forward to building on this success with you in future years and to welcoming new donors to our community of benefactors.
