St Catharine’s prepares to welcome new Development Director

Wednesday 1 February 2023

St Catharine’s is delighted to welcome Catherine Twilley FRSA as the College’s next Development Director. The Governing Body elected Catherine to join the College as an Official Fellow and to lead the Alumni & Development Office, effective 1 April 2023. Her election comes as Deborah Loveluck (2007) prepares to retire in April after 16 years of service in the same role.

Catherine joins St Catharine’s from Christ's College, Cambridge, where she has been responsible for alumni relations and fundraising as Development Director since 2008. Prior to that she was Development Officer and, latterly, Associate Development Director, at St John's College, Cambridge, where she also took her BA in Classics and rowed with the Lady Margaret Boat Club.

Within the University, Catherine was an active member of the University Alumni Advisory Board’s Working Group on Networks and Volunteers, and voluntary work is close to her heart. She is a Trustee of the Cambridge Sports Lake Trust and of the Hawks and Ospreys Charitable Trust. She was Parent Governor of Hill's Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge between 2019 and 2021, and she served as a St John Ambulance Volunteer Vaccinator in 2021.

Professor Sir Mark Welland (2016), Master of St Catharine’s, commented:

“Since its foundation 550 years ago, St Catharine’s has been built on a strong foundation of philanthropic giving, which we need to maintain and expand in response to the challenges facing today’s students and the wider higher education sector. This will only be possible in partnership with our alumni community around the world. We are incredibly fortunate that Catherine will be joining us in April, given her strong track record in Cambridge and alumni engagement.”

On one of her recent visits to St Catharine’s as part of ensuring a smooth transition into her new role, Catherine said:

“It is an exciting time to join St Catharine’s as the College has earned a reputation for academic excellence and creating an environment in which everyone is able to thrive, which you can trace back the many ways that Deborah and others have engaged alumni in student support initiatives, the health and wellbeing programme and major building projects. I look forward to building on these strengths and establishing relationships with all parts of the St Catharine’s community in the months ahead.”

Tina Patel (1989, Mathematics) and William Paul (1992, Modern & Medieval Languages), co-chairs of the St Catharine’s Campaign Advisory Group which advises the College on fundraising matters, added:

“We are excited about Catherine’s appointment and warmly welcome her to the Catz family. She brings considerable experience to this leadership role and we look forward to supporting her and the talented team in the Alumni & Development Office as the College continues to strengthen its connections with alumni around the world and secure its future development.  As Catherine gets to know our alumni and works with the Governing Body to define the College’s priorities for the years ahead, she can be confident that she will be greeted with the renowned Catz spirit of friendship throughout the extended College community.”
