Monday 15 November 2021

St Catharine’s is delighted to announce that its Governing Body has elected Hend Hanafy as the College’s newest Official Fellow. Hend has been appointed Teaching and Research Fellow in Law and will serve as Director of Studies in Law.

Prior to joining St Catharine's, Hend was a Bye-Fellow and Director of Studies in Law at Christ's College, Cambridge. She recently submitted her thesis after completing her doctoral research at Girton College, Cambridge. Hend has practised as a lawyer in Cairo, Egypt, and was Assistant Lecturer at Cairo University. She holds a BA and Master in Law from Cairo University, and an LLM and Diploma in Public Policy from the American University in Cairo.

Hend’s broad research interests are in criminal law and penal theory, with a focus on the justification of punishment, limits of criminalisation and legitimacy of state authority. Her doctoral research addressed the philosophy and justification of punishment in authoritarian states, detaching the authority to punish from the broader politics of oppression and exploring the guarantees that protect citizens’ autonomy and freedoms.

Hend commented, I am delighted to join St Catharine’s and look forward to getting to know Fellows, staff and students, as well as supporting the College’s vision of providing a world-class educational experience. While I hope my research opens the door for more philosophical engagement with punishment in conditions of political oppression and injustices, I also sincerely wish that there comes a day in which we do not need to address questions related to authoritarianism.”

Professor Sir Mark Welland (2016), Master of St Catharine’s, remarked, “It is my great pleasure to welcome Hend Hanafy as our newest Fellow. With over half of the global population estimated to be living under regimes that can be described as authoritarian or close to authoritarian, the insights and protections that Hend has been researching are fundamental to our understanding of the modern world. I have no doubt that our community will give Hend a warm welcome and embrace the opportunity to learn from her considerable expertise.”
