A joint statement from the Master and the Senior Tutor

Saturday 16 July 2022

In response to an article in The Times, Professor Sir Mark Welland (2016), Master of St Catharine’s, and Dr Holly Canuto (2020), Senior Tutor of St Catharine’s, commented:

“St Catharine’s has earned a reputation for being at the forefront of student welfare provision in Cambridge and we valued the opportunity to review a draft version of the University’s suicide prevention strategy alongside other Colleges.

"The College contributed a wide range of comments based on our considerable professional expertise and with the sole intention of improving the effectiveness of the strategy in preventing suicide and creating an environment where all students feel safe, supported and able to thrive.

"The College’s Governing Body has since approved the updated version of the University strategy in May 2022 and we are committed to working closely with St Catharine’s students and the wider Collegiate University to guide how best to implement this strategy.”
