Professor John Bridgwater (1938–2021)

Friday 20 August 2021

It is with great sadness that St Catharine’s College has learnt that Professor John Bridgwater, alumnus and Emeritus Fellow of the College, died on 2 May 2021. The College flag will be flown at half-mast in his memory on 21 August 2021.

Professor Bridgwater was admitted to St Catharine’s to read Chemical Engineering as an undergraduate in 1956. After studying at Princeton University and working at Courtaulds, he returned to Cambridge and was elected to the Fellowship of St Catharine’s in 1969. In 2004, he served as the College’s Acting Senior Tutor. He was elected an Emeritus Fellow of the College later the same year.

Professor Sir Mark Welland, Master of St Catharine's, commented, "John was a devoted member of the College and will be sorely missed as a friend, colleague and talented chemical engineer. His membership of St Catharine’s spanned 65 years and we are incredibly fortunate to have benefitted from his support throughout that time. On behalf of everyone at St Catharine’s, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Diane, and their family.”
