Student writes and produces new song

Thursday 27 October 2022

An undergraduate student at St Catharine’s has written and produced a new pop song on Spotify. Annie Chown, a second-year Music undergraduate, released ‘Still Wish You Were Mine’ based on an original draft written in a single evening on an acoustic guitar in her College accommodation during Easter Term 2022.

Annie explains, “I’ve always dabbled with writing songs as a hobby since the age of 6 years old, starting out with little jingles. I’ve been more serious about my songwriting in the last few years and have begun producing my own tracks. It’s been a great creative outlet for processing my thoughts and feelings.

“My new single draws on influences from far and wide: pop and indie music, in particular the art and music associated with synthwave, and an amalgamation of people and feelings. Listening to Conan Gray’s ‘Wish You Were Sober’ was the catalyst that gave me a phrase on which to build a song and I was able to finesse the original draft between May and July 2022.”

Annie recorded the song over the summer vacation in her garden shed, specially modified with blankets and pillows to improve the sound quality, and produced the final edit on her laptop. The vocalist, Maisy Fuggle, is one of Annie’s friends from home, and the graphics were created in collaboration with school friend Emily Dennis.

‘Still Wish You Were Mine’ is the second single that Annie has released on Spotify. She wrote and produced ‘Feeling Wavy’ in 2021.

“My first two tracks are about very different things and come from very different places because they were written 18 months apart. While I’ve got another two singles in the pipeline, I’ll be focusing on my degree for now. But I’ve got big plans for after graduation – releasing my first EP and pursuing postgraduate studies in pop production.”
